Working in Hawaii
Since officially becoming a U.S. state in 1959, Hawaii remains an important player in American agriculture. Due to the unique location and climate of the state, several crops unfeasible or impractical to grow on mainland U.S. actually thrive on the Hawaiian Islands. Prominent exports include sugarcane, pineapple, and a large variety of exotic flowers. Other major crops harvested in the state include avocados, papayas, guavas, bananas, and coffee beans. The prosperous industry creates plenty of agricultural jobs for motivated applicants. The fishing industry proves a substantial source of work opportunities, as well.
In 2014, workers in Hawaii harvested over 19,000 acres of sugarcane. Each farm needs to hire migrant workers, farmhands, and supervisors to keep up with business demands. In addition, pineapple growth and distribution largely took off as a result of efforts in the state by agricultural corporation Dole. Though the state no longer remains dominant in the pineapple industry, widely available jobs still exist in cultivating the fruit throughout the islands.
The Aloha State offers job seekers lucrative opportunities to begin careers in the farming industry. Throughout Hawaii, applicants regularly obtain picking jobs, farmhand positions, and migrant labor roles. Entry-level hiring requirements typically stand limited to age, work eligibility, and consistent transportation. Fitness and dexterity prove helpful to candidates, as well. Pay rates begin around minimum wage or on piece-rate bases. In addition, applicants with relevant experience often gain opportunities for management positions along with corporate roles. Employment benefits plans and attractive salary packages generally accompany higher level job openings.
