Working in Wisconsin

A balanced climate complete with fertile upland soils result in a flourishing agricultural industry in Wisconsin. The landscape, boasting lush fields of alfalfa, remains well suited for feeding the approximately 1.26 million dairy cows. Almost 55 percent of total agricultural revenue originates from dairy products, which allows the state to rank nearly supreme in the nation. Cheese makers produce more than 650 diverse varieties of cheese, including provolone, cheddar, baby Swiss, feta, and Gouda. Dairy goats, about 46,000 head, further add to the production of milk, butter, cream, and cheese. Preparing for the demanding holiday season, Christmas tree farms harvest a little less than 1.8 million firs and pines. Fruits, such as Cranberries, apples, and strawberries, grow throughout central and northern portions of the state. Other top commodities yielding high incomes include honey, aquaculture, sheep, lambs, turkey, corn, and wheat. Miscellaneous exports from The Copper State range from mink skins and cereal grains to canned and frozen fruits. Job applicants regularly seek out farms in the area to partake in the well-to-do industry. Dairy farmsteads employ nearly 146,000 people alone, which accounts for 40 percent of available agricultural positions.

Bordered by Minnesota and Michigan on the north and Illinois on the south, Wisconsin remains the 23rd largest state in the United States. Five geographical regions comprise The Badger State: the Lake Superior Lowland, the Eastern Ridges, the Northern Highland, the Central Plain, and the Western Upland. Rolling hills and ridges, beautiful lakes, and fertile plains and valleys account for a remarkable variety of crops. The state soil, Antigo silt loam, mainly supports dairy, potato, and timber production. The productive, well-draining soil accompanies nearly 550 other loams found in the terrain. On average, the state experiences around 33 inches of rainfall annually. Of the 15 million acres farmed, warm summers and cold winters allow plants to rapidly grow and for the soil to replenish. Temperatures in January hover around 13.2 degrees Fahrenheit, while in July 66.9 degrees remains commonplace. America’s Dairyland supports roughly 69,800 farmsteads on around 209 acres each.

Considered prized workplaces among the immigrant population, dairy farms provide higher incomes and steady year-round work compared to seasonal harvesting of crops. Of the hired dairy laborers, approximately 40 percent stand as immigrants, with around 88 percent from Mexico. Rosendale Dairy, a farm collaborating with Milk Source, which operates dairies in Wisconsin and Michigan, frequently hires milkers in Pickett. Job openings request candidates capable of working long hours in fast-paced environments; however, competitive pay and full benefits, which include 401(k) retirement plans, paid vacation, and career advancement opportunities, remain obtainable for such physical demands. Aspirants should print off application forms online for hand delivery or email submissions. For Spanish-speaking individuals, a translator remains available for phone calls and emails. Organic Valley, based in La Farge, operates as one of the largest organic farmer cooperatives in the world. Farmsteads, such as Heidel Dairy, Bontreger Family Farm, and Polich Farms routinely employ dozens of farm labors to meet demands of the popular brand.

One out of nine employment positions in The Dairy State originate from the agricultural industry. Approximately 345,000 jobs, about 10 percent of total employment, pertain to farm-related occupations. Furthermore, each opening generates another 1.46 jobs elsewhere in Wisconsin. Employment hunters obtain positions in the field by applying online with detailed resumes and application forms or through hand-delivering submissions in person. Typical work opportunities range from pickers and migrant worker jobs to farmhands and milkers. On average, entry-level salary packages begin at $10.00 an hour but quickly rise to $13.00 per hour for talented aspirants. College graduates with agrarian backgrounds enjoy careers such as supervisor, production specialist, purchasing manager, laboratory technician, environmental analyst, and accountant. Pay rates for high-leveled careers begin at $45,000. Ideally, hiring personnel like to see candidates with strength, stamina, manual dexterity, technical skills, attentive listening, and previous farming experience.
