Working in Virginia
A prosperous industry thanks to the rich soil found along the East Coast, agricultural production in Virginia dates back to the first settlement in America. Tobacco, one of the first exports from the colonies, remains widely used. Operating for 100 years or longer, Century Farms, of which approximately 1,000 locations exist, demonstrates the importance of farmsteads throughout the past. Wineries, equines, world-renowned ham, and broilers bring over 357,000 jobs to the state. By far, agriculture exceeds all other profitable industries in the Mother of Presidents state.
Both livestock and cropland fuel the success of the industry, which yields $55 billion yearly. Poultry farms, specializing in broilers, produce nearly 1.3 billion pounds of chicken worth over $559 million each year. Following chickens, beef cattle represent the second leading commodity averaging $429 million annually with close to 692,000 head of cattle. Infamously known around the world, Smithfield hams hail from a small town in Isle of Wight County. Other products of note include soybeans, corn for grain, dairy cows, and turkey. Home to the notoriously recognized racehorse champion, Secretariat, the Old Dominion state rivals the greatest locations in the United States for leader of the equine industry. Roughly fifth in the nation, Virginia holds a little less than 41,000 operations, which house 215,000 horses, bringing the state an average of $1.2 billion annually. Employment hunters enjoy access to various niches in the agricultural industry with horses alone producing a little more than 16,000 jobs.
Divided into five geographical expanses, the complex state consists of the Atlantic Coastal Plain, the Piedmont, the Blue Ridge, the Appalachian Ridge, the Valley Region, and the Appalachian Plateau. Southern on the Atlantic Ocean, Virginia borders Maryland and West Virginia on the north as well as North Carolina and Tennessee on the south. Depending on the locale, bitterly cold winters or long temperate growing seasons occur. The mountains of southwestern regions quickly gather upwards of 60 inches of precipitation annually, while the Shenandoah Valley only receives 33 inches of rainfall. Deciduous, broad leaf trees make up the lush forests of The Cavalier State, with around 65% of terrain covered in woodlands. Identified on one of the oldest tilled farms in Jamestown, Pamunkey soil forms in the basin of the James River. Mostly cultivated for corn, small grain, cotton, and tobacco, the well-draining loam also features in pastures and forested areas of pine and hardwoods.
Situated in the mountainous southwest region, Green Valley Poultry Farm resides on approximately 1,380 acres of farmland in five locations around Abingdon. The farmstead, one of the largest producers of shell eggs in Virginia, regularly seeks candidates for farm laborer positions. Applicants should submit resumes through email or call for availabilities. Consisting of 2,500 apple trees and 800 peach trees, Stribling Orchard routinely hires migrant workers to serve as pickers for the 45 acre homestead. Beginner farmers enjoy opportunities offered by the apprenticeship featured at Polyface, Inc. The multi-generational farming practice requests aspirants fill out questionnaires to enter applicant pools. The farm utilizes unconventional methods to produce pastured-poultry, grass-fed beef, and a rotation system.
Predominately family-owned and operated, roughly 46,000 farms reside in the Ancient Dominion State. Aspirants looking for work on one of the many farming properties should contact local managers and owners. By arriving in person with resumes, candidates make lasting impressions for seasonal or year-round work. Typically, contenders demonstrate interest in picking and harvesting fruits and vegetables. Previous experience or proper farming education garner hourly wages of $10.00 to $12.00 with accompanying housing sometimes available. Work-related benefits, such as medical insurance, 401(k) retirement plans, paid time off, and long-term disability, normally stand reserved for advanced occupations such as work in management, production, education, lending, marketing, and accounting. Agribusiness degrees yield annual salaries exceeding $45,000. Larger corporations may request applicants apply online through career networks in order to gain employment consideration.
