Working in Utah
Utah agricultural industry job seekers encounter upwards of 10,000 opportunities for part-time, seasonal, and full-time work. Farming, fishing, and forestry positions alone account for more than 1,300 positions in The Beehive State in addition to related employment in shipping, distribution, conservation, and ecological surveying. Although a small portion of the overall workforce, agriculture enjoys a near 175 job-per-annum increase, as highlighted by the 2014 Annual Report released by the Office of the Governor. Around 18,100 farms operate throughout the region comprising 11 million acres of land or more than 20% of the state.
Each year, climates in the area yield more than 3,000 hours of sunshine and only 18 inches of total precipitation. The mostly arid terrain requires extensive amounts of irrigation and diversion of natural watersheds to maintain the $1.3 billion state agricultural industry. Modernization of dry farming tactics and technological advances enable The Beehive State to produce significant amounts of major commodities. Utah ranks in the top ten among cherry and apricot production as well as a chief producer of livestock, specifically mink pelts. According to the Department of Agriculture website, livestock receipts comprise around a third of total sales receipts for the state farming industry.
Ezoic
Despite traditions rooted in the notions of The Old West, Utah contains diverse populations of citizens and varied opportunities for agricultural employment. Around 20% of the state population descends from Hispanic or Latino ancestry, which provides suitable networking for migrant workers moving north from states like Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. Picking job candidates looking for general labor often find lucrative prospects in areas surrounding and just outside of Salt Lake City. Utah Department of Agriculture and Food (UDAF), which oversees the farming and livestock operations in the state, maintains public offices in the Capital City of Salt Lake in addition to local and commercial agricultural enterprises. Workers also regularly enjoy part-time and full-time positions on large ranches featuring a statewide average of more than 600 acres per location.
Fruit and vegetable pickers, farmhands, and other agriculturally related employees make an average of $12.83 an hour, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Individuals laboring on ranches often make close to the state mean wage at start, while farmhands and pickers make slightly less at roughly $10.00 per hour. Supervisors enjoy annual salary options falling between $30,000 and $40,000. Many large organizations like UDAF offer employment benefits packages, including healthcare coverage, 401(k) retirement plans, and paid time off. Farms and ranches throughout the state, both commercial and independent, offer similar job benefits plans for long-term or tenured career professionals.
