Working in Texas
Deep roots in Texas history romanticize the lives of cowboys on vast stretches of open land driving cattle. In modern days, livestock yields billions of dollars annually and contributes to a prosperous agricultural industry. A total of approximately 13.8 million head of cattle residing on close to 149,000 operations allows The Lone Star State to frequently claim the title of number one cattle producer each year. Cotton, a major cash crop, also reigns supreme, with Texans harvesting nearly $2.2 billion worth of the commodity. Dairy products like milk, butter, cheese, ice cream, and yogurt bring in a little less than 8% of value. Followed by broilers, greenhouse products and corn each supplement the economy as top commodities. Sheep and lamb numbers continue to dominate with around 960,000 animals producing 4.2 million pounds of wool. Valued at roughly $4.8 billion, agricultural exports to China, Mexico, Brazil, and Canada fuel further revenue. Job hopefuls seeking to enter a thriving community may join with close to 56,000 other people holding positions in the industry.
Far ranging in scope, Texas represents the second largest state in the United States. Four distinct regions include the Coastal Plains, Central Plains, High Plains, and Mountains and Basins. Low mountains, gently sloping hills, and open plains give way to the intersection of multiple climate variations. Annual rainfall decreases from the east to west with the coastal plains experiencing the most at between 30 and 55 inches and the mountains slimming down to 0 to 16 inches of precipitation. Long growing seasons favorably begin in February for southern portions and April or May in the north. Temperatures may become extreme during the summer months with highs of 115 to 120 degrees Fahrenheit in the Central Plains. Moderately well-draining, Houston Black soil extends over temperate grassland prairies and covers around 1.5 million acres in Texas. The terrain comprises of expansive clays and supports grain sorghum, corn, cotton, and small grain. Within territorial borders, The Lone Star State actually produces over 1,100 different soils.
Farming an average of 30,000 acres of cotton annually, King Ranch originated in the mid-19th century. The historic homestead, also known as the birthplace of American ranching, specializes in producing admirable quarter horses and beef cattle, as well. Approximately 500 to 1,000 applicants may receive employment with the farm, depending on seasonal needs. AzTx Cattle, frequently identified as one of the leading independent cattle-feeding operations, maintains a herd of nearly 265,000 head of cattle. Hiring consideration extends to animal caretakers, farmhands, and seasonal laborers. Granting generous salary packages to candidates deemed hardworking and experienced, the livestock farm regularly pays above $12.00 an hour for desirable expertise. Roughly 172 million acres encompass the enormous state, including Briscoe Ranches, Waggoner Ranch, O’Connor Family Ranches, and Jones Family Ranches. More than 98% of farms remain family run and managed; however, talented workers serve as vital parts on both larger and smaller operations.
Generally speaking, one in seven Texans maintains a position in an agricultural-related field. Pouring in from the Mexican border, migrant workers, pickers, and seasonal labor forces commonly find jobs on crop fields or cattle ranches. Work benefits may only extend to highly qualified individuals with degrees or years of experience. Such laborers enjoy job benefits including paid time off, medical insurance, disability, and 401(k) retirement plans. Individuals seeking employment typically apply in person and request the direct attention of hiring leaders. More advanced occupations may require candidates submit online application forms, which requests educational background, farming experience, and miscellaneous skills. Salary packages of over $4,000 a month extend to individuals working in education, production, supervising, lending, agribusiness, and for the government. Qualified aspirants should remain passionate about farming, utilize equipment knowledge, and attentively listen to directions.
