Deep roots in Texas history romanticize the lives of cowboys on vast stretches of open land driving cattle. A total of approximately 13.8 million head of cattle residing on close to 149,000 operations allows The Lone Star State to frequently claim the title of number one cattle producer each year. Cotton, a major cash crop, also reigns supreme, with Texans harvesting nearly $2.2 billion worth of the commodity. Dairy products like milk, butter, cheese, ice cream, and yogurt bring in a little less than 8% of value. Sheep and lamb numbers continue to dominate with around 960,000 animals producing 4.2 million pounds of wool. Far ranging in scope, Texas represents the second largest state in the United States. Four distinct regions include the Coastal Plains, Central Plains, High Plains, and Mountains and Basins.
