Working in Tennessee

Despite ranking in the bottom 20% of U.S. states in terms of total area, Tennessee boasts a booming and highly lucrative farming industry plush with viable options for employment. Farmland encompasses over 40% of The Volunteer State, or roughly 10.9 million acres, and includes close to 78,000 individual operations averaging 160 acres or so per site. In addition to traditional fruit and vegetable crops like corn, soybeans, tomatoes, tobacco, and hay, the southern state stands as a large producer of livestock and timber. Workers regularly find part-time and full-time jobs on tobacco, cattle, equine, goat, tomato, cotton, and hay farms, as the region ranks in the top ten among other states for each commodity.

Tennessee also holds an abundance of traditional crop cultivation and picking jobs available due to highly favorable climates. Generally temperate weather allows growing seasons to reach in excess of 220 days or more in western portions of the state. The Appalachian mountain range found along the eastern border of the state limits vegetation growth to roughly 130 days but produces rich soils created by silt deposits carried down off the mountains. Counties statewide experience an average 55 inches of rain per year, which also supports healthy vegetation growth and the agricultural industry in whole. Mean annual temperatures vary slightly from west to east; however, the major metropolitan areas of Memphis, Nashville, and Knoxville regularly report yearly averages right around 60-degrees Fahrenheit.

The richest areas for crop-related jobs reside in the central and western parts of the state. Agricultural employment hunters easily find work in the Sequatchie Valley area near Chattanooga, TN, and along the Mississippi River Delta bordering Arkansas and Missouri. Modern and natural irrigation systems used to harness the growing potential of the state rivers and fertile soils allow farmers to produce crops in vast quantities. In 2010, Tennessee exported over $290 million worth of soybeans and nearly $175 million worth of cotton. Corn used for grain regularly contributes around $600 million to the state GDP. The entire industry values at nearly $5 billion annually. Around $1 billion worth of total exports sell to foreign countries, which further solidifies the importance of the industry not only locally but domestically, as well.

Some of the most lucrative employment opportunities available in the Tennessee agricultural industry include logging jobs in the eastern portions of the state. Oregon and Washington represent the only other states in the U.S. rivaling the timber produced in the southeastern territory. Logging comprises close to 3% (82,000 jobs) of the total workforce (2.7 million jobs) in The Volunteer State, with annual profits exceeding $300 million. Migrant workers and farmhands looking for agricultural work often enjoy competitive wages landing just above $12.00 an hour for entry-level positions. Opportunities also remain available for growth into foreman positions yielding well over $30,000 annual salary. Some farms and logging firms offer employees piece-rate salary options and opportunities to earn work benefits, including healthcare coverage, time off, and 401(k) retirement plans. Access to employment benefits typically occurs with seniority or advancement into full-time careers.
