Working in Oklahoma

Home to one of the last remaining tall grass prairie preserves, Oklahoma associates with a long-rooted history and deep ties to conservation. Two Choctaw words, okla and humma, meaning “red people,” make up the name of the state. Frequently connected with the Dust Bowl of 1934, the catastrophe only effected the Panhandle portions of the state, prior to historical legend. The Sooner State actually boasts a flourishing agricultural industry yielding earnings from livestock and crop production. As the leading source of income, beef cattle comprise approximately 46% of cash receipts. Hogs and broilers, other high-demand commodities, produce combined revenues of nearly 23% of profits. Harvested among roughly 2,500 unique soils, wheat, hay, peanuts, and pecans thrive as chief crops, as well. Steep, rolling terrain cultivates an abundance of hay, which would otherwise erode with tilled row crops. The state remains one of the top agricultural producers of wheat in the nation bringing in an annual 81.6 million bushels of winter wheat. Employment statistics propose high demands for local farm laborers; however, farmers still utilize migrant workers to a large degree.

From the western boundary, the terrain of Oklahoma slopes from the high plains down to the wetlands in the southeast. Ten geologically diverse regions comprise the topography of the state. The Panhandle, characterized as unusually dry, receives an average of 17 inches of rain or less per year. Much wetter southeast areas collect four times more rain, with 56 inches gathered annually. Temperature ranges often reach Fahrenheit degrees below zero or extremes of 100 degrees in the summer. Excesses of wind accompanied by thunderstorms and tornadoes in the spring demonstrate the dangers of the Plains state. Found in 33 of 77 counties, port silt loam, the state soil of Oklahoma, profiles as a medium-textured alluvial soil deposited along flood plains. Distinctively of a red hue, the loam produces native vegetation such as tall grasses and pecan, walnut, and cottonwood trees if left undisturbed. Growing seasons between 168 days and 238 days accounts for varying climate conditions.

Ezoic
Braum Family Farm, an impressive 10,000-acre facility in Tuttle, OK, milks thousands of cows every hour. The land consists of milk barns, processing plants, a bakery, a distribution facility, and a water treatment plant. An online career network grants candidates the opportunity to browse through openings by shift, position, and responsibilities. Generous employment benefits, including medical insurance, 401(k) retirement plans, paid vacations, and product discounts make the company desirable to farm laborers, animal caretakers, and seasonal workers. Hauani Creek Ranch Pecans continues a long-tenured tradition of harvesting native and papershell pecan varieties. Talented pickers, migrant workers, and equipment operators also gain employment with the family-owned operation. Many major crops no longer require intense labor, which reduces the number of necessary farmworkers. However, specialty vegetables and livestock provide work opportunities within new ventures, such as popular grass-fed animal cultivation and organic produce sales.

Among the approximately 18,100 Oklahoma farms hiring, roughly 51,000 occupations stand obtainable. Entry-level applicants with minimal farming experience find availabilities especially during April through November when seasonal harvests reach peaks. Hourly wages average around $10.00 to $12.00 for skilled laborers capable of demonstrating hard work for long hours. Advanced careers requiring further education and previous experience garner salary packages as high as $55,000 a year. Positions frequently feature in the fields of education, marketing, production, and manufacturing. Generally, Sooner farming jobs require record keeping, repairing and maintaining equipment, digging, planting seeds, harvesting, identifying plants, and informing managers about progression. To locate desirable openings, aspirants should apply online or seek out farm owners in person.
