Working in New Mexico

New Mexico, filled with an abundance of geographical diversity, maintains deep roots in farming and ranching despite an overall dry climate. The Mogollon Tribe, prevalent in the area roughly 2,500 years ago, grew corn, squash, and beans on the land. Later Spanish explorers, Native Americans, and Anglo pioneers brought contributions to New Mexicans still essential to the modern state agricultural industry. As top revenue producers of dairy products and cattle, New Mexico accounts for nearly 76% of total cash receipts generated from both areas. Scarce quantities of water require most cropland to utilize irrigation. Hay, used to feed cattle, brings the most profits, followed by pecans, greenhouse and nursery products, chili peppers, and onions. The Chile Pepper Institute, in connection with New Mexico State University, leads the nation in chile pepper research. Employment continues to climb with expanding requests produced by popular commodities.

Home to six out of seven life zones in the world, New Mexico holds the capability of supporting an array of plants and animals based on various temperatures and elevations. Four geographical regions, the Great Plains, the Basin and Range, the Colorado Plateau, and the Rocky Mountains, divide the landscape of The Land of Enchantment. Penistaja soil, spanning 1 million acres, creates deep, well-draining, and reasonably permeable terrain. Productive grasslands account for excellent livestock grazing and wildlife habitats. Growing seasons fluctuate depending on location, with the north experiencing 60 days of prime weather, the south 190 days, and the Rio Grande Corridor averaging 110 days. Similarly, precipitation varies from 20 inches in the north to as little as nine inches in the south. With total farmland encompassing close to 43.9 million acres, the state ranks fifth in possessing the largest amount of arable land.

Ezoic
The average farm consists of nearly 1,800 acres and generally requires multiple farmhands to accomplish daily tasks. The Old Windmill Dairy, a 30-acre farmstead on the outskirts of Albuquerque, consistently seeks farm laborers to assist with cheese making and herd management. Occupations frequently available range in accessibility among migrant workers and pickers to animal caretakers and farm laborers. Diaz Farms, over 1,600 acres of cropland, employs farmworkers to assist in the fields with red chile peppers, green chile peppers, onions, pinto beans, sweet corn, and other vegetables. Pay rates begin at minimum wage and may rise to $9.00 with experience and education. Located in La Mesa, NM, Stahmanns flourishes on a 3,200-acre pecan farm. During harvesting season, which spans October through December, the ranch seeks temporary workers to engage in fruit and vegetable picking.

Individuals eager to start careers in the agriculture industry of New Mexico should begin by applying to local farms in person. With farms close to 97% family-owned, candidates should locate managers or owners and demonstrate interests in aiding the success of business. Teamwork, dedication, punctuality, and honesty remain prized amongst potential workers. Depending on the ranch, health benefits and worker’s compensation may or may not stand available. Applicants desiring higher incomes and excellent job benefits packages should obtain advanced degrees and accrue years of experience. Opportunities in sales and marketing, supervising, and education as well as analysis pose as lucrative avenues of employment for qualified contenders. Online applications generally remain mandatory for larger operations or more advanced careers.
