Working in New Hampshire

The stony and relatively infertile terrains of New Hampshire account for a unique agricultural industry focused on more alternative commodities. Greenhouse and nursery products sweep the market and hold the most influence on the farming sector of the economy. Home and garden plants along with Christmas trees hold as the most important products. Nearly 200 Christmas tree farms scatter across the mountainous landscape of The Granite State. Family-owned and operated, the tree farms produce thousands of trees, such as traditional Balsam and Fraser firs to diverse treasures like Korean firs and Fralsams, and ship all over the country. Dairy products further contribute to roughly 31% of total agricultural cash receipts. The leading vegetable crops, sweet corn and potatoes, generate ample revenue as well as the top ranking fruit crop, apples. Other increasingly popular commodities in the New England State include maple syrup, cattle and horse hay, beef cattle, and aquaculture. Individuals find opportunities to gain employment within the industry on a constant basis, especially if drawn to specialty farming.

Humid and short summers followed by long cold winters create growing seasons close to 120 days for most portions of the state. Farmland closer to the shore or with higher elevation may experience variation in temperatures compared to the typical 12 to 26 degrees Fahrenheit in January and 63 to 70 degrees in July. Uniform precipitation year-round amounts to an average of 40 inches; however, the White Mountain region spanning across north-central New Hampshire receives closer to 46 inches yearly. The northern slice of the smaller state features spodosols, an ashy gray, acidic soil with a leached surface layer. Along the southern parts, inceptisols assist with forestry, recreation, and watersheds and exhibit minimal horizon development. Approximately 472,000 acres of farmland provide close to 4,100 farms a place to call home. The average farmer maintains a little less than 113 acres of land.

Ezoic
Acorn Hill Farm located in Lyme, NH, resides on 150 acres in a quaint rural community. Producing organic fruits and vegetables, the farm seeks pickers and laborers to assist in planting, weeding, and harvesting the certified commodities. Offering hourly wages of $8.00 to $10.00, salary options remain consistent with averages throughout the state. Wilson Farm, established in 1884, pursues farmhands, migrant workers, and associates year-round. With full-time and part-time positions available, the homestead offers health insurance, paid time off, a 401(k) retirement program, and employee discounts. Larger operations like Stonyfield Organic, members of the Danone family, also call New Hampshire home and maintain numerous employment opportunities.

An average of around $200 million worth of goods produced from agriculture support the close to $850 million value of the farming industry in the state. Hardworking employees remain needed to contribute to the production and ultimately help yield profits. Laborers, generally over 18 years of age and high school graduates, apply to fill part-time, full-time, and seasonal positions. Previous experience in the industry typically boosts resumes and offers a competitive edge against other applicants. Migrant workers should arrive in person with resumes to demonstrate vigor and dedication. Occasionally, larger operations request aspirants submit online applications for consideration. Individuals with advanced degrees may obtain higher-earning positions, such as work in supervising, analyzing production, engineering, and managing livestock.
