With all 82 counties contributing to the agricultural industry in The Hospitality State, Mississippi represents an ideal place to find seasonal and entry-level picking, farmhand, and migrant jobs. Agriculture serves as the largest commercial enterprise in the state, with annual revenues nearing $8 billion in total. Chief commodities include eggs and poultry, timber, soy, and cotton. Over 37,000 farms reside across the state. Farming comprises more than 35% of total land available, or an area just shy of 11 million acres. The Mississippi Department of Agriculture and Commerce (MDAC) regulates trade, production, and distribution related to farming throughout the state. With western borders along the Mississippi River and southern borders reaching the Gulf of Mexico, Mississippi presents unique opportunities for farm work. Fertile river valleys, average rainfalls around 55 inches per year, and warm temperatures keep vegetation lush and thriving. Temperatures rarely dip below freezing in the Southern state, which allows for continuous crop growth and farming exploits year round. Close proximity to large bodies of water also bolster the agricultural industry of the state and allow for easy transportation of goods as well as irrigation. Northwest and West Central Mississippi represent the most fertile areas of the state in terms of farmland and availability of related jobs. The Mississippi River Delta, which comprises most of the western portion of The Magnolia State, serves as a leading area of cotton production in the U.S. In 1992, the region accounted for nearly 9% of the total cotton produced nationwide.
Many Mississippi cotton farms pay migrant workers, pickers, and farmhands well. However, other commodities provide equally lucrative salary, career, and work benefits options.
