Working in Maryland
As diverse as the state, agriculture in Maryland encompasses everything from crops and dairy to horticulture and wineries. Farmland scatters across the terrain in the upper Eastern Shore and north central portions of the state. Approximately 2 million acres, nearly 32%, of the Mid-Atlantic state engages in the farming industry. Generating excess revenues of over $17 billion, farming remains essential to the state economy. Top agricultural commodities include poultry, nursery crops, dairy, dent corn, and soy beans. The dominate fruit crops include apples and tomatoes, while sweet corn leads vegetable crops. Individuals and families enjoy the nearly 100 farmers markets scattered throughout the counties. The Maryland Department of Agriculture ensures the safety of livestock and residents, while protecting cherished natural resources. As the regional agricultural industry flourishes, employment opportunities regularly extend to farmhands, migrant workers, and pickers.
With rapidly growing populations, farmers gradually abandoned traditional production and switched attention to customer-directed yields. Careers in turf and nursery production, seafood, racing and pleasure horses as well as poultry control the industry. Nearly 12,300 farms averaging 165 acres seek candidates to fill positions as farm assistants, laborers, production specialists, and animal caretakers among other opportunities. Perdue Farms, Inc. routinely hires associates interested in poultry. Others like South Mountain Creamery Inc. pursue animal caretakers for cows. And yet, organic farms, like Fox Haven, still regularly undertake apprentices to educate about farmland.
As the largest commercial industry in the state, agriculture employs nearly 350,000 Marylanders. Larger and smaller operations possess varying hiring methods. Certain companies may request candidates to submit online applications, while others abandon technology and require in-person visits. Farm laborers and pickers ideally hold previous experience; however, many entry-level positions encourage anyone with vigor to apply. The average pay rates fluctuate between $8.00 and $10.00 an hour. Part-time and full-time work remains accessible depending on the time of year, as well. Workers find openings in more than just farm production, and frequently enjoy jobs in wholesale, marketing, farm supply, and agribusiness.
