A state with a rich tradition in farming and agriculture, Kentucky accounts for a majority of the burley tobacco produced worldwide. Each year, state tobacco farms cultivate an average of 200 million pounds of burley tobacco for export and production. The state also ranks as one of the top-producing states of soybeans and corn and ranks first in the country in non-alfalfa hay. Thoroughbred horse breeding also generates a great deal of income for the state as well as chicken farming and cattle and calf raising. In 2005, only tobacco farming generated more income from exports than horse breeding and livestock raising, with industry-specific revenues in excess of $340 million and $260 million, respectively.
The Bluegrass State calls home to more than 76,500 farms totaling nearly 13 million acres of land. Roughly half of the farms situated throughout the state produce or process tobacco in some manner. Kentucky also historically ranks as one of the leading producers of young chickens for consumption as broilers in the United States. Around 800 poultry farms reside throughout the region and constitute a workforce of more than 7,000 employees. Farms producing both poultry and tobacco remain fairly common in the Southern State.
Successful farming exploits stem from the permeable and fertile soils comprising much of the state. The specific type of soil found primarily throughout Kentucky, known as Crider Soil, drains well and stores nutrients easily, which creates ideal conditions for growing crops. Low elevations and mild temperate climates featuring average annual temperatures between 53 and 59, depending on geographic region of the state, also account for the ongoing success of the Kentucky agricultural industry. Growing seasons typically begin in early April and extend into November when the first frosts generally take place. Historically, the air in the state stays humid during the warmer months, with extended periods of sunshine. During the summer, the state experiences clear skies roughly 60% of the time, contrasted with only 40% during the winter.
