Working in Kansas
While Kansas produces a wide variety of agricultural products, the Plains State serves as one of the top growers of grains in the country. Major cash crops include wheat, corn, soybeans, and sorghum, with wheat representing the top commodity in the state. The Sunflower State, also aptly named The Wheat State, produces close to 15% of total wheat grown nationwide and accounts for around 43% of U.S. sorghum production. Kansas also stands as a major producer of cattle and calves, sunflowers, hay, and cotton.
Farmland comprises nearly 90% of the 46 million available acres of land in the state, with roughly 21 million acres reserved for crop growing and upward of 16 million acres utilized for grazing pastures. Most of the cattle farms reside to the south and west, specifically Haskell, Finney, Gray, and Scott counties, while areas along the Mississippi River to the east call home to a majority of the fruit, grain, and vegetable farms in operation. The total number of farms operating in the state agricultural industry falls around 62,000. According to Kansas Department of Agriculture, most farms (86%) operate under the control of families or private citizens. Large commercial farm comprise a much smaller segment of the industry (4.6%), while partnerships between farms prove relatively common but only account for 6.2% of total farming operations.
