Widely known for seed production, Idaho ranks as a major agricultural state in the U.S. Specific cash crops include potatoes, grapes, wheat, sugar beets, barley, cattle, and dairy products, specifically milk. The Gem State also serves as a major grower of alfalfa sprouts, hops, mint, and grass. Total farmland in Idaho covers approximately 11.5 million acres. In addition to major cash crops, Idaho farms produce around 180 different commodities. In total, the state calls home to roughly 27,000 farms. Agricultural operations prominently include wineries and potato farms, which the state ranks third in nationally.
Idaho picking jobs provide migrant workers and entry-level employment hunters ample opportunity to find farm work. The state features two time zones, Mountain and Pacific, which bears some significance on farming across both regions. Idaho farming jobs may also offer exceptional pay rates, employment benefits, and career advancement opportunities. Southern Idaho accounts for the most viable agricultural areas in the state, with hundreds of farms and thousands of picking, cattle, and administrative jobs available. The northern portions of the state historically remain dominated by cattle ranches and areas for livestock grazing due to drier, arid weather patterns. Most of the traditional picking jobs reside in the south. Agricultural workers comprise roughly 48,000 jobs of the total workforce in the state.
Farmhands, migrant workers, and pickers regularly earn pay scales equivalent to the national average rate of $10.00 per hour in the State of Idaho. Salary options may drastically increase for individuals with experience in the industry or workers assuming administrative careers in agriculture. Picking jobs and other farming careers may offer piece-rate pay, as well. Workers falling under piece-rate salary options usually perform work short-term with pre-determined durations. Farms across the Northwest state offer both contractual and full-hire opportunities.
