Working in Southern California

Southern California splits thousands of acres of grids of streets and highways with cultivated fruit and vegetable cropland. Comprised mainly of rural and desert regions, the arid areas to the east make way for densely populated urban oases along the coasts. Urban populations in Los Angeles, San Diego, and Orange County commonly believe agriculture produces minimal effects on the economy; however, farming in southern counties yields approximately $48 billion in sales and employs over 160,000 workers. Rural Imperial County heavily depends on farmland to support economic growth. Similarly, Ventura, San Diego, and Santa Barbara flourish with the aid of greenhouses, nursery products, fruits, and vegetables. In Ventura County, nearly 20,000 jobs remain generated from fruit farming alone. Riverside and San Bernardino utilize strengths in the dairy industry, while Los Angeles requires agricultural outputs for food processing and related services. A vital part for the southern portions of The Golden State, agricultural activity generates billions in the economy, substantial tax revenue, and hundreds of thousands of jobs.

Approximately $9 billion in gross revenue comes from key agricultural commodities alone. Among the southernmost regions of California, around 18,100 farms exist across roughly 2.8 million acres of arable land. The average farmstead boasts 154 acres and close to $390,000 in sales. Fruit and nut crops amount for nearly 30% of cash receipts, vegetables nearly 28%, nursery and flowers close to 23%, and livestock, field, and seed crops yielding the remainder of income. Top commodities include strawberries, worth around $988 million, nursery products, lettuce, milk from cattle, and avocados. Farmland not only produces essential products but guarantees open spaces for both recreational and aesthetic amenities. Conservation efforts slow the development of converted urban build-ups and provide the opportunities for ecological and environmental tourism.

Heavily influenced by the Transverse and Peninsular Ranges, the lower portions of the state serve as prime examples of unique and diverse climates. Precipitation varies depending on elevation, temperature, and topography influences. The rain shadow effect, in which air flow from the ocean rises and cools, but as it reaches the other side of the mountain the flow, warms and evaporates, extends into the ranges. Southeastern areas experience desert conditions and dry winds, depending on distance from the coasts. Filled with both low clouds and fog, interactions from ocean air masses and local mountains give way to such weather predictions. The average temperature ranges from a high of 76 degrees Fahrenheit in Burbank to a low of 53 degrees in Riverside. The El Dorado State maintains clay, sand, decomposed granite, and cobble-mixed soils.

Underwood Family Farms diversifies by delivering varieties of fresh fruits and vegetables while engaging the public in pick-your-own produce, birthday parties, school tours, and a harvest festival. Regularly available employment opportunities entice animal caretakers, farm laborers, seasonal staff, and educational guides. An application form printed from the website asks picking job candidates to provide previous experience and education. Workers may hand deliver resumes and forms to hiring managers to ensure immediate consideration. With 131 employees, Scott Brothers Dairy operates a herd of 2,000 cattle on over 900 acres in San Jacinto, CA. Laborers receive competitive compensation, generous rewards, and room for career advancement. Another farmstead, Suzie’s Farm, resides on 140 acres of USDA-certified organic farmland and employs roughly 85 workers, including pickers and general farmhands. The family-run homestead remains passionate about organic, locally grown produce.

Migrant workers flock to the strawberry paradise of Southern California and eager to compete with other fruit pickers for the limited amount of openings accessible for one of the most labor-intensive row crops. Often, laborers make slightly below minimum wage to upwards of $10.00 an hour. Health insurance and time off rarely stand available for most migrants. However, lucrative careers for individuals with agricultural degrees or years of experience allow for annual salary packages well into the $40,000 to $50,000 range. Positions in education, marketing, banking, accounting, production, and supervising grant job benefits including life insurance, paid holidays, and disability. Aspirants normally find online applications for larger, high-tech farms, while smaller, family-run operations prefer to receive resumes in person. Employees must demonstrate commitment, responsibility, determination, and the ability to explicitly follow directions.
