Working in Arkansas
The thriving agricultural industry in the State of Arkansas creates plentiful job opportunities. The state persists as one of the foremost growers of rice in the United States. Approximately 1.3 million acres of land in The Natural State stand dedicated to rice production alone. Cotton, corn, and peanuts remain major crops for the state, as well. 2013 saw record yields for cotton and corn. In addition, the U.S. Department of Agriculture proposed making Arkansas a primary peanut-producing state, which would require a three-year average of at least 10,000 tons of peanuts. The state already met the criteria for the 2014 growing season.
As of 2012, Arkansas began growing edamame (soybeans) on a widespread basis. Uniquely, the state remains the first and only place in the U.S. where farmers grow the vegetables. Consequently, demand in the industry proves high and job seekers find lucrative opportunities to gain meaningful employment on soybean farms. In addition to the growing areas, aspiring workers obtain jobs at processing plants and through shipping networks.
Overall, Arkansas maintains a prosperous farming industry and job seekers generally face little difficulty in obtaining work in the state. Entry-level candidates may apply for picking jobs, farmhand positions, and migrant labor roles. Requirements normally stand limited to age, work eligibility, and physical stamina. Pay rates typically start around minimum wage or on a piece-rate basis. In addition, applicants with significant experience may find openings as supervisors and administrators.
