Working in Alaska
Alaska offers a great deal of unusual and alternative agricultural opportunities. Some of the biggest industries in the state include forestry and fishing. The seafood industry alone contributes over 70,000 jobs to the state. Many workers perform jobs year round. The large industries allow part-time and seasonal job seekers to work for much longer than traditional agricultural positions. Seasonal employees may also find plentiful employment openings as vegetable pickers or livestock and dairy workers. In particular, lettuce, basil, and varieties of berries remain prominent crops. Depending on soil conditions, beets, broccoli, potatoes, and carrots may thrive, as well, which creates work for crop pickers. Alaska farms traditionally hire a wide range of laborers, including migrant workers and farmhands.
Job seekers looking for farm work may encounter a surprising amount of suitable farmland in Alaska, particularly in the southeastern region of the state. Days of almost constant daylight cause many crops to grow much larger than in other areas. To counteract inclement weather, many farmers in the state, also known as The Last Frontier, operate greenhouses and grow controlled-climate crops. While some workers may experience difficulty finding farm work in the state, the amount of exciting career opportunities and attractive job benefits provide extra incentives to join the Alaska farming industry.
