Working in Ontario
Densely populated Ontario sits in east-central Canada among Manitoba, Hudson Bay, Quebec, and portions of the United States. The area’s economy once relied on a dominant agricultural industry. While the number of individual farms continues to decline, technology allows for significant increases in yields from larger facilities. Overall, the province experiences an ongoing rise in the total amount of land used for growing crops. Approximately 52,000 farms operate in the region, with nearly 27,000 of them owning 53 or less hectares. Of these farmsteads, roughly 16,000 hire full-time and seasonal workers. Job hunters frequently gain employment as pickers, animal caretakers, and general farm labors.
A substantial portion of the Ontario agricultural industry relies on cattle, dairy, and small grains. Along Lake Erie and Niagara Peninsula, grapes and other kinds of fruits flourish, while rich soils near Newmarket support vegetables. Corn and soy continue to grow throughout southern portions of Ontario, as well. The southern shore produces widespread apple orchards, whereas alternatives like hazelnuts and ginseng reside on northern shores. An expansive dairy industry cares for over 322,000 cows on around 4,000 farms. Close behind, almost 282,000 beef cattle call Ontario home, as well as nearly three million pigs, a little less than 31 million broilers and roosters, and about 350,000 sheep.
The humid continental climate stems from cold, artic air from the north and warm, moist air from the Gulf of Mexico. Average temperatures hover around 80 degrees Fahrenheit in July and 25 degrees Fahrenheit in January. Select portions of the province acquire approximately 40 inches of precipitation on an annual basis. Northern regions of the province experience extremely long, frigidly cold winters with short, cool summers. Soil in south western Ontario consists of loose material entitled drift with underlying bedrock compiled of dolomite, limestone, shale, and sandstone. The terrain features plains and low hills, which represent ideal growing conditions.
Farms throughout Ontario routinely place job seekers into fulfilling opportunities, which provide desirable pay and work benefits. Cities like London, Lefaivre, Tavistock, and Tillsonburg employ dairy workers and herdsman on a regular basis. Openings require workers to preform general farm work, milk cows, sanitize parlors, feed calves, and assist with herd health. In return, typical wages hover around $13.00 an hour and include 45 to 55 hour work weeks. Other cities like Etobicoke, Ruthven, and Mississauga consistently hire produce pickers. The normally seasonal position consists of sorting and picking various produce for salary packages of $12.00 an hour and lengthy work weeks.
For aspirants seeking career positions, detailed resumes go a long way in impressing farm owners and managers. While entry-level opportunities remain obtainable, job hopefuls with at least six months of experience gain more attention and higher salary options. Individuals may apply online or hand-deliver employment forms depending on the preferences of managers. Based on the classification of the employee, farm workers, harvesters, and select others remain entitled to regular pay, leaves of absence, termination notice, vacation with pay, and public holidays. Room for advancement and managerial positions allow qualified contenders the ability to earn competitive salaries.
