Working in Nova Scotia

Nova Scotia is the second-smallest province in Canada, only ahead of Prince Edward Isle in terms of total land mass. The large peninsular territory comprises 55,000sqkm or 21,000sqmi. Just shy of one million people reside in the ocean-side province, which boasts a wine industry often compared to regions of heavy wine production in France. Other top commodities include fur, dairy, cattle, blueberries, eggs, poultry, and strawberries. Various assortments of field vegetables also grow throughout the seaboard province.

The Nova Scotia agricultural industry consists of around 4,000 farms nationwide. Organic farming, mostly in conjunction with greenhouse efforts, comprise around 9.5% of total farming operations in the region, which sits well above the national average of 6.8%. Dairy products and poultry account for nearly 50% of cash receipts annually. Combined, the two trades value at more than $227 million CAD. The next five most profitable commodities sold in the province total just under $140 million CAD annually. As a whole, agricultural efforts bring in over $500 million CAD per year.

Consistent precipitation and warm summer months create ideal settings for a thriving agricultural industry. Each year, Nova Scotia farming benefits from 100cm to 150cm of precipitation spread steadily throughout the calendar. Northern and inland areas receive the most precipitation each year, while coastal and southern areas experience elongated and prolific bouts of fog instead of rain or snow. Residents of major seaside cities like Halifax and Yarmouth sometimes encounter more than 100 days of fog annually. Greenhouses dedicated to farming now comprise roughly 3.4 million sqft., with continued pushes to expand the industry.

Around 10,000 persons work either directly or indirectly related to the agricultural industry in Nova Scotia. Individuals seeking life-long careers in the profitable trade may take interest in gaining accreditation at the Dalhousie University Faculty of Agriculture, which specializes in priming young minds and eager applicants for diverse lines of work in agriculture, logistics, administration, and management of farms and farming systems.

More traditional paths to agricultural jobs include applying at local fur, dairy, cattle, and berry farms. The highly profitable commodities require large workforces to inspect products, pick or gather the goods, and ready the items for export or shipment. Migrant workers from the United States, other foreign countries, and even nearby Canadian Provinces often encounter widespread opportunities for part-time and full-time job opportunities offering industry-competitive pay and access to employment benefits over time.

According to Nova Scotia employment rights, only farming employees over the age of 16 may receive minimum. Piece-rate workers engaged in harvesting crops on seasonal bases may remain ineligible for minimum wage pay rates under the same laws due to the highly variable nature of the jobs. Outside of part-time, seasonal work, employees enjoy at least one day off every seven, up to six holidays per year, opportunities for overtime pay, and call-in pay, which guarantees workers at least three hours of pay in addition to standard wages if called in to work outside of normal hours. Piecework jobs remain in high abundance throughout the industry, with wages varying from post to post; however, farmhands, migrant workers, fruit and vegetable pickers, and general laborers routinely earn the provincial minimum wage of $10.60 CAD an hour.
