Working in Newfoundland
Composed of the island Newfoundland and a large mainland, Labrador, the combination makes up a province in easterly Canada. Though the region lacks fertile soil and maintains short growing seasons, agriculture in Newfoundland and Labrador continues to steadily expand. Aquaculture also thrives in the coastal province with cod and shellfish (crab and shrimp) reigning supreme in the market. Poultry, dairy, local vegetables, fruits, and wild berries act as primary commodities in the relatively listless marketplace. The industry yields approximately $500 million CAD annually in sales. To meet demands, over 6,500 employees work directly and indirectly in agriculture. Employment hunters readily acquire job titles of migrant worker, picker, dairyman, general laborer, and fisherman.
The region remains home to roughly 550 farmsteads, which accounts for less than one percent of the nearly 230,000 farms in Canada. Each operation averages about 160 acres of land, with the whole industry utilizing around 90,000 acres. Specifically, cropland used for field crops, vegetables, fruits, nursery, and sod accounts for a little more than 22,500 acres. Approximately seven percent of farms report organic production with close to 50 certified establishments. Corn and barley occupy more than 1,800 areas of terrain. About 6,000 head of dairy cows reside in Newfoundland and Labrador. Other livestock and alternative animals include sheep and lambs, mink, and foxes.
Resting in northeastern North America, Newfoundland and Labrador occupy two separate geographical regions. Together, the provincial territories absorb about four percent of the total land area in Canada. A mixture of mineral soils, bogs, rock outcrops, barrens, and bodies of water appear in Newfoundland. Very coarse and stony soil inhabits upland barrens, while boreal forests spread out across the land. Favorable agricultural conditions appear along elevated ridges, coastal lowlands, and river terraces. Labrador consists of islands, coves, fjords, barrens, and river valleys. Broadly, Newfoundland boasts a humid continental climate influenced by the sea. On the other hand, Southern Labrador maintains a subarctic climate and Northern Labrador receives classification as a polar tundra. The regions experience temperatures as chilling as -27 degree Celsius in January and as warm as 23 degrees Celsius in July.
In the agricultural industry, job seekers frequently find entry-level employment on a seasonal to year-round basis. Glenview Farm in St. John’s routinely looks for multiple aspirants to fill dairy farm work opportunities. With only one to six months of experience required, individuals earn attractive salary packages of $12.50 CAD an hour. Employees operate and maintain farm machinery, feed animals, clean stables, milk cows, and write daily progress reports. Physically demanding positions require 60- to 70-hour work weeks and heavy, repetitive lifting. Another farm, J & C Sod Farm in Bay Bulls, also hires applicants on a seasonal basis to assist with planting and harvesting crops, cleaning stables, and managing livestock and poultry. The opportunities pay almost $11.00 CAD an hour and offer staff suitable accommodations. Common of openings, candidates should demonstrate flexibility, the ability to work in teams, and stay well-organized.
Thousands of staff members ensure the success of the agricultural industry in Newfoundland and Labrador. Demands for farm laborers, dairymen, aquaculture technicians, pickers, migrant workers, machine operators, and managers lend to a flourishing field. Typical pay rates for entry-level job titles begin at $10.00 to $13.00 CAD and may include room and board accommodations. Aspirants should arrive in person to farms local in the area and speak directly with management or owners. A polished resume highlighting experience and related skill sets goes a long way in securing interviews. Occasionally, contenders may locate positions online and send resumes via email or submit an online application form.
