Working in Manitoba

The fifth-largest Canadian province in terms of population, Manitoba serves as a major hub of wheat, cattle, and oilseed farming. Agriculture accounts for more than 11% of total land area in the territory (76,000sqkm), with around 16,000 total farms in operation. In 2011, crop farming and cattle raising drew more than $2.4 billion CAD in revenues. Canola, wheat, soy, and potatoes pulled in over $100 million CAD in profits individually. Both commercial and private farmers primarily use traditional methods of cultivating and harvesting crops as well as raising and processing livestock for sale and consumption. While only a small portion of the agricultural industry (roughly 810 farms in 2006) enjoys formal accreditation as certified organic operators, the province comprises between 5% and 6% of the total organic farming practices found throughout the North American country.

Most of the agriculture abound in Manitoba resides in the southern portions of the territory. The winters in the region remain dry and bitterly cold, with average high temperatures October through March rarely rising above 30 degrees Fahrenheit. Consisting mostly of plains, the landscapes remain ideal for farming but with very few natural obstructions to block winds, which push winter temperatures even lower. Long, cold winters often hinder crop farming, especially fruits and vegetables; however, winter-resistant grains like various kinds of wheat, as well as livestock, continue to thrive in even the harshest conditions found in the Canadian province.

Statewide, the Manitoba agricultural industry comprises roughly 5% of the total Gross Domestic Product. Around 70% of commodities produced agriculturally in the province become exports. In total, the significant, billion-dollar industry provides more than 60,000 jobs. One out of every ten employees works in farming, processing, shipping, or cultivating agriculturally based goods.

Ezoic
Jobs available in the Manitoba agricultural industry range in scope and responsibility from private, family-owned farmhand positions picking fruits and vegetables to state-appointed quality control and environmental careers overseeing safety and sustainability practices. Opportunities for co-ops remain available through the University of Manitoba School of Agriculture as well as through large, commercial operations. Migrant workers, aspiring farmhands, and career agriculturalists most readily find employment in the southern regions of the province, especially on grain and cattle farms. Spring and winter wheat harvests require teams of pickers to collect and process the grains.

Agricultural positions typically grant employees hourly pay rates between $11.00 CAD and $12.00 CAD. Individuals with long-term career goals most often find fruitful employment with the state or as supervisors, foremen, or administrative officials on commercial farms. Salary options exceed $26,000 CAD annually for highly skilled positions. Workers may also take advantage of job benefits packages featuring healthcare options, CPP retirement plans, paid time off, and life insurance. Seasonal and part-time opportunities may exclude workers from employment benefits.
