Working in British Columbia

Supported by a resource-based economy, British Columbia thrives along the west coast of Canada with a broad geography and climate. Commonly referred to as BC, the province supports roughly 4.6 million residents. In addition to inhabitants, an impressive number of food products grow and prosper in the region. About 200 agricultural commodities yield a market value of nearly $2.9 billion. While farmers utilize only a measly four percent of land for commercial farming, the province still generates about six percent of the total gross farm receipts in Canada. Of the roughly 20,000 farmsteads spread across around 2.6 million hectares, almost 98 percent remain family-owned and operated, with corporations only owning two percent. Year-round and seasonal employment opportunities consistently become and remain obtainable in the North American territory. More than 6,500 farms, or 33 percent of total farms in the province, report to paying wages and salaries to farmworkers.

Variations in cost of production, growing conditions, and a fluctuating market leads to continuous changes within the agriculture industry. The landscape consists of pastureland, about 50 percent, crops, around 20 percent, and other miscellaneous uses, such as summer fallow and seeded pastures. Over the years, farms specializing in hay, field vegetables, melons, sheep and goats, greenhouse vegetables, poultry and eggs, and fruit and nuts experienced widespread expansion. Declines took place in beef cattle, hog and pig, dairy, nursey, and grain farms. British Columbia entertains the largest amount of acreage for apricots, raspberries, bush blueberries, and sweet cherries in Canada. A little less than 17,000 hectares grow various types of berries and grapes. Approximately 620,000 cattle and calves prosper on farmsteads throughout the province. Other agricultural ventures, such as beekeeping, horses, bison, and organic produce, support the economy, as well.

Bordered by the Pacific Ocean on the west side, British Columbia features rugged coastlines stretching for more than 17,000 miles. Mountainous fjords and uninhabited islands also scatter near the shore. The capital, Victoria, resides on the southeastern tip of Vancouver Island. The narrow strip of island houses a dense population, while the western portions of the territory remain covered by a temperate rainforest. Spectacular scenic views comprise the Coast Mountains and the Inside Passage and offer a lot to the ecotourism industry.

Of the terrain, approximately 75 percent of lands in the province prove mountainous, 60 percent forested, and a sparse amount of arable land at five percent. Merges of the North Pacific Ocean drift and Kuroshio Current give way to a mild oceanic climate, which frequently produces rain. The weather verges on a dry-summer Mediterranean and encounters pockets of subtropical conditions. High mountains shield the interior of the province and provide the area with a semi-arid climate and less than 10 inches of precipitation per year. Average temperatures range from three degrees Fahrenheit in Fort Nelson during winter to 89 degrees Fahrenheit in Osoyoos during summer.

Close to 930,000 individuals find employment in agricultural-related work throughout British Columbia. Of the employees, nearly 545,000 hold year-round positions, while the rest occupy seasonal and temporary job titles. Spreads such as Northern Cherries Inc., located in Oliver, routinely seek migrant workers during harvest times. While most positions remain obtainable seasonally, employees still find generous work benefits. With competitive wages around $10.00 to $11.00 an hour, farm laborers may engage in picking, animal husbandry, machine operation, and general work. Common job titles range from farm worker, tractor operator, and orchard picker to vineyard pruner, animal caretaker, and farm supervisor. Depending on length of employment and occupation, employees earn paid time off, health insurance, and discounts on produce.

Whether an experienced professional or starting in the industry for the first time, candidates locate positions on farmsteads either through online applications or applying directly in person. Ideally, aspirants demonstrate previous farming skills through detailed resumes, which highlight former employers and educational background. Workers should possess reliable transportation and flexible availability. Many larger operations hire dozens of staff members before busy harvests begin, while smaller establishments seek general laborers skilled in several facets of agriculture. Recruiters search for potential employees able to commit seasonally or long-term, physically capable of meeting strenuous duties, and dedicated to the development of successful farmsteads.
