Working in Alberta
The scenic views of western Canadian province Alberta include snow-capped mountains, far-stretching prairies, desert wildernesses, and lush coniferous forests. As one of the most populous regions of Canada, the area features approximately 4.1 million residents. The province also holds a productive agricultural economy well regarded in the world. Also known as The Princess Province, the territory earns roughly 22 percent of farming cash receipts for the country.
Ranching and farming attracted many early immigrants. Accounting for nearly 30 percent of total farm area in the North American nation, Alberta reserves around 20 million hectares of agricultural based land. As of January 2016, diversity in crop and livestock production allows the industry to thrive. More than 60,000 farm workers participate in the labor force. Expected to expand employment opportunities in the coming years, the workplaces generally hire seasonal farmhands, livestock caretakers, crop pickers, and managers.
The total production of major crops in Alberta amounts to an estimated 19 million tons. Wheat serves as the leading commodity, with about 9 million tons churning out annually, followed by barley and canola. In combination, barley and canola encompass three-fourths of total crop production. Approximately 40 percent of all cattle in Canada reside in Alberta, which amounts to about 5.9 million head. Beef cattle represent a large agriculture sector and yield a little less than $3 billion in farm cash receipts. Hogs also support the economy and comprise roughly 14 percent of swine production in the country. In previous years, provincial support granted farmers $6.6 million to care for sheep, goats, reindeer, elk, and bison. More unique endeavors include beekeeping and manufacturing of lumber, OSB, and plywood from vast northern forests.
Fourth-largest province after Quebec, Ontario, and British Columbia, Alberta spans 255,500 square miles. The capital city, Edmonton, remains centrally located. For the most part, the province maintains adequate water resources with numerous rivers and lakes. The northern portion contains boreal forests, while the southern quarter consists of mostly prairie. The dry continental climate results in warm summers and cold winters. Often, the cold artic systems from the north create extreme seasonal conditions. Minimum temperatures may creep down to -65 degrees Fahrenheit in January but increase to 104 degrees Fahrenheit in July. The Rocky Mountains region may collect as much as 24 inches of precipitation, including snowfall, annually, as well.
Occupations within the agriculture industry range from farm workers and dairy producers to greenhouse operators, animal care attendants, and beekeepers. The average worker remains between 25 and 54 years old and men substantially dominate the industry statically. Depending on the job title, staff members stand eligible to acquire exceptional benefits and competitive salary options. A general farm worker typically enjoys salary packages of $15.00 and $21.00 an hour. Farm supervisors garner slightly higher incomes due to experience and education of $16.00 and $22.00 per hour. On the other hand, consultants and specialist garner even high hourly wages of $32.00 to $43.00. Employment benefits may include health insurance, paid time off, discount on produce, and 401(k) retirement plans. Ideally, applicants should expect to work long hours, possess at least 6 months of farming experience, and hold the proper educational background.
Active job hunters find work on large- and small-scale operations by preparing detailed resumes. Each farmstead offers a unique hiring practice, which may include arriving in person or submitting online application forms. In particular, Rockridge Dairy, located in Ponoka, Alberta, processes whole natural dairy products, including both goat and cow cheese and milk. The farm routinely hires dairymen to provide care and milk the animals. Candidates contact hiring managers by email, phone, or arriving in person. Located near Camrose, Alberta, Weyga Farming Ltd. produces high-quality grain. The company seeks seasonal migrant workers to aid in the harvesting and production of wheat. Approximately 80 percent, or roughly 13,000 individuals, work for establishments which employ 20 or less workers. About 20 percent of farm laborers receive employment from operations with between 20 and 99 staff members.
