  • Vermont Farm Jobs – Harvest and Seasonal Work

Self-sufficient farms scatter the landscapes of Vermont throughout much of history. The housing industry coupled with the small size of the state equates to a battle of preserving prime farmland. Ever increasing demands for community development requires farmers to diversify agricultural outputs. While dairy still represents approximately 72% of farming revenue for The Green Mountain State, other commodities make an appearance as leading income producers. Maple syrup production, renowned around the United States, collectively amounts to around 36% of the supply for the nation. The terrain, both hilly and rocky, foster ideal conditions for cows, sheep, llamas, and goats. Yielding close to $27 million annually, the equine industry flourishes on around 100,000 acres of open land. Regularly harvested products include apples, honey, corn, hay, greenhouse goods, Christmas trees, and fiber products. With groups like Migrant Justice, a farmworker rights organization, laborers enjoy access to a bountiful fair and humane career opportunities.

Changeable weather and four distinct seasons give way to a year-round vacation destination. Fall foliage in autumn, mountains for skiers in winter, and temperate summers put Vermont on the map. Average temperatures fluctuate from 51 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit. Precipitation generally remains well-dispersed throughout the year, with totals around 44 inches. Down the center of the state, the Green Mountain range along with the Appalachian, Hoosac, and Taconic make up much of the topography. Loamy glacial soils advocate for potential agriculture and forestry. Fertile land, commonly identified around Lake Champlain and in the Connecticut River Valley, maintains excellent hay production capabilities. Featured on glaciated uplands, the Tunbridge soil series, also known as the state soil, consists of well-draining, moderately deep earth. Covered portions typically support wooded areas; however, cleared spaces often remain ideal for cultivated crops.

Between 1,200 and 1,500 migrant workers, one-third of whom formerly resided in Mexico, work on approximately 995 dairy farms. Migrant Justice organizes protests to request fair rights for employees, and frequently targets the popular brand, Ben & Jerry’s. The campaign, Milk with Dignity, created a movement for higher wages, acceptable housing, medical insurance, and time off. Animal caretakers and farm laborers also locate employment through a rising organic industry. Nearly 220 certified-organic dairies operate in Vermont contributing an average of $76 million per facility and adding roughly 1,000 jobs. The total number of organic producers boasts a little less than 590 farms and 104,000 acres. Regularly hiring staff, Blue Spruce Farm in Orwell employs over 575 individuals to milk around 1,300 cows. Other farmsteads, such as Cate Farm, seek seasonal pickers and farmhands to assist with organic vegetables and herbs. The farm encourages candidates to email resumes and cover letters of interest to gain a position on the phone list for future availabilities.

Encompassing 1.2 million acres, around 7,000 farms reside in the New England state. Job hunters may apply online by submitting application forms for select operations. Hiring managers encourage individuals comfortable with farm work to actively arrive in-person and demonstrate desirable skill sets while leaving personable impressions. Despite unjust situations for some workers, usually livable wages of $10.00 to $12.00 an hour remain widely obtainable along with housing and workers compensation. Advanced career options in marketing, supervising, production, education, lending, and agribusiness entice employees with exceptional job benefits packages. Annual pay rates may exceed $40,000 a year and offer medical insurance, 401(k) retirement plans, paid time off, and employee assistance programs. For determined business-savvy folks, beginner farming resources in addition to internships guide newbies with loan and grant support, educational tips, and fact sheets.
