California Farm Jobs – Harvest and Seasonal Work

The third-largest state in the U.S., California boasts one of the most expansive and profitable agricultural industries in the Union, with more than 160,000sqmi of total land. California also hosts approximately 5,000 corporate farms, which provide standardized hiring processes, pay scales, and unions.

Due to an expansive size, the West Coast state also offers diversity in climate, which further stimulates the reach of farms spanning from Northern to Southern California. Areas to the north of the Golden State historically feature milder, temperate climates with sharp distinctions between all four seasons. As workers travel south, climates shift to more sub-tropical classifications, with long periods of clear skies and warm year-round temperatures. However, eastern portions of the state remain dry, arid, and unusable for farming, as deserts like Colorado Desert, Great Basin Desert, and Mojave Desert, which contains Death Valley.

Wine production, which represents roughly $5.6 billion of total revenues generated by agriculture in the Golden State, encompasses close to 4,000 wineries, which represents more than half of the 7,000 or so total wineries in the United States. A large portion of wineries located in the state reside in the north-central region along the coast; however, the central temperate climates found throughout the foothills of the Sierra Nevada and surrounding valleys offer the best conditions to grow the grapes used in wine production. According to the Wine Institute, the sizable industry produces more than 875,000 jobs nationwide and includes manufacturing, shipping, merchandising, and administrative aspects of production.

Warmer year-round temperatures throughout the state bolster the local agricultural industry and generate upwards of $42 billion in annual revenues. Applicants looking for farmhand work or picking jobs on California farms typically need no real experience to gain employment. Home to six out of seven life zones in the world, New Mexico holds the capability of supporting an array of plants and animals based on various temperatures and elevations. Penistaja soil, spanning 1 million acres, creates deep, well-draining, and reasonably permeable terrain. Productive grasslands account for excellent livestock grazing and wildlife habitats. The average farm consists of nearly 1,800 acres and generally requires multiple farmhands to accomplish daily tasks. The Old Windmill Dairy, a 30-acre farmstead on the outskirts of Albuquerque, consistently seeks farm laborers to assist with cheese making and herd management. Nevada Farm Jobs – Harvest and Seasonal Work

Mountainous landscapes and desert terrains account for most of the State of Nevada. The Battle Born State utilizes contributions from agriculture to support rural communities and overall economic growth. Range livestock production serves as the leading commodity in the western state, with cow and calf operations most predominate. Larger ranches focusing on cattle and sheep reside in northern portions of the state, while expansive dairy farms hold foundation in the south. Poultry, lamb, and horses also find places among livestock enterprises. Crops such as alfalfa hay and seed, potatoes, barley, wheat, oats, mint, garlic, and onions prevail on the land, as well. Irrigation allows for success in the arid environment, which generates job growth. Employment should continue to steadily climb, with the average farm owner expecting to add workers or at the very least keep current staff members onboard.

Vast amounts of Nevada span as uninhabited, sagebrush-covered desert; however, despite dry terrain, agriculture continues to thrive in The Silver State. A minuscule seven inches of average annual rainfall allows the state to claim the title of driest in the nation. Mostly encompassing the northern half, orovada soil covers more than 360 million acres in the Great Basin. Featured in semiarid rangeland, the soil derives from mixed rock and drains well. Of the total land area, approximately 110,000 square miles, or about 85%, remains government-owned. Farmland consists of around 5.9 million acres, with the average ranch about 1,800 acres.

Growing exponentially since 1907, Anderson Dairy employs close to 135 people and operates as one of the largest and most innovative dairy processing facilities in Nevada. The estimated 37,000 square-foot location brings annual revenue of just below $45 million. Peri and Sons, hiring over 1,200 workers during peak seasons, produces white, yellow, red, and sweet onions on over 8,000 acres. Winnemucca Farms, specializing in potatoes, produces profits of about $34 million by utilizing just under 140 labors, as well. Entry-level positions pose available for laborers, farmworkers, migrant workers, pickers, and livestock caretakers. Desired skills for the local workforce include previous experience, honesty, reliability, punctuality, and customer knowledge.

Approximately 3,100 farms of varying sizes scatter across the landscape of Nevada. Both directly and indirectly, the agricultural industry accounts for close to 60,700 jobs. Employment hopefuls typically apply online or hand deliver applications. With annual salary packages ranging between $27,000 and $36,000, workers should maintain previous experience and related education. Individuals with advanced degrees earn higher salaries, close to $50,000 a year and up, as supervisors, educators, marketing specialists, and maintenance engineers. Depending on the commodity, farmers hire full-time and part-time workers year-round and large numbers of seasonal workers during peak seasons.

Montana Farm Jobs – Harvest and Seasonal Work

The high-plains of Eastern Montana provide ideal environments for agriculture to thrive. Flat land and modern irrigation methods enable agriculture to rank as the top industry in the state. The two major commodities produced in Montana, wheat and cattle, serve as testaments to the history of the area nicknamed Big Sky Country as part of the American Frontier, when settlers looking for respite from the crowding eastern colonies and territories moved west and found free-range cattle and semi-arid conditions in which only grains originally grew.

Around 28,000 farms comprise the Montana agricultural industry, which encompasses roughly 66% (or 59,700,000 acres) out of approximately 94,000,000 total acres of land. Of the total farms in the state, nearly 10,000 consist of 1,000 or more acres. According to the National Association of State Departments of Agriculture, one out of every six persons employed in The Treasure State farms or maintains a farming-related job.

Livestock and grain farming provide the largest and widest selections of agricultural employment in Montana. The state ranks first in the country in terms of certified-organic wheat and lentil production, and among the top ten for more than a dozen other commodities, including flaxseed, barley, honey, alfalfa hay, garbanzo beans, and beef calves. Collectively, farms produce nearly 200,000,000 bushels of wheat each year, which requires large teams of employees able to operate heavy agricultural equipment and export the crop to various markets. Ranching operations boast over 2.5 million head of cattle, which more than doubles the entire state population (1,023,000 million). On such large scales, both types of agriculture offer excellent opportunities for farmhands, migrant workers, and fruit and vegetable pickers to find meaningful and lucrative jobs.

The State of Montana agricultural industry flourishes in spite of climates featuring limited precipitation. On average, most of Big Sky Country receives between 14 and 16 inches of precipitation per annum, excluding the mountainous western regions characterized by the Rocky Mountains, which often receive as much as 50 inches of precipitation a year. Many of the areas to the east of the territory remain arid and desert-like. Farming operations in the east require specialized methods to sustain successful production of crops and livestock. Dry farming and major irrigation campaigns remain integral and render the otherwise unusable lands fruitful, expansive, and of great value to the state gross domestic product.

However, Montana features harsh contrasts in weather between warm and cold seasons. In areas under 4,000 ft. above sea level, temperatures remain much cooler than the arid plains regions. During the winter, average temperatures remain in the low 20s throughout the state, while summer temperatures for eastern counties average between 60 and 80 degrees. The mountainous regions experience temperatures 10 to 20 degrees cooler during the summer. Ironically, the mountains retain vegetation much better than the plains regions due to the nearly five-fold difference in annual precipitation and widespread presence of evergreens, which remain live year-round.

Minnesota Farm Jobs – Harvest and Seasonal Work

Despite frigid winter temperatures, agriculture in Minnesota possesses a rich history. Encompassing over 53% of the state, 27 million acres support the agricultural industry. The Gopher State boasts over 81,000 farms, with each sustaining around 350 acres of land. Corn and soybeans stand as the top yielding crops for The North Star State, nationally ranking in the top five for both products. Sugar beet, oat, sweet corn, green pea, wild rice, and wheat productions account for exceptional cash receipts, as well. Uniquely, Minnesota harvests cultivated paddy wild rice and traditional Native American hand-produced wild rice. Revenue also resides with several top-producing livestock commodities, such as hogs, turkey, bison, ostriches, and milk cows. Agriculture generates $75 billion in economic activity for the state. Along with hefty profits, farming amounts to about 340,000 jobs.

Known as Lester soil, the Minnesotan earth maintains a dark grayish brown loam surface, which spans across approximately 16 counties. Primarily used for forage, corn, and soybean production, the terrain develops in prairie and forest interfaces. The state also serves as home to three ecological regions: Laurentian Mixed Forest, Eastern Broadleaf Forest, and Prairie Parkland. Minnesota devotes 1.32 million acres of farmland to conservation and wetland reserve programs. Depending on location, the north experiences growing seasons lasting close to 100 days, while the south utilizes a longer period of roughly 150 days. Average annual frost-free days also range between 96 for the north and 163 for the south. Temperatures drop to around 0 degrees Fahrenheit and climb to 74 degrees F on average, while extremes yield degrees reaching -20 during the coldest portions of the year and in the lower 100s during the warmest.

Christensen Farms, a large, integrated pork production company, operates in the state and offers numerous employment opportunities. Applicants apply online by submitting resumes to the human resource department. One of the largest egg producers in the United States, Rembrandt Foods, also hires farm laborers in Minnesota. Oregon Farm Jobs – Harvest and Seasonal Work

Sustainability and family proprietorship serve as benchmarks for the Oregonian agricultural industry. Roughly 98% of all farms in operation remain under family control. As of 2012, close to 1,100 farms boasted ownership by a single family for more than 100 years. The Oregon Department of Agriculture oversees the cultivation and production of agricultural goods in the Northwest state. Recent legislative acts implemented by ODA limit the use of pesticides in reference to the collection of hazardous substances in ground water and protects the health of cattle and other livestock. The ninth largest state in the U.S., Oregon boasts a moderate population limited to western coastal regions of the state by the Cascade and Rocky Mountain ranges in the east, which provides for nearly 16.4 million acres of arable farmland.

Collectively, Oregon farms produce around 250 commodities and rank as leading growers of Christmas trees, hazelnuts, ryegrass seed, black raspberries, crimson clover, and nearly ten other fruits, nuts, seeds, and vegetables in the U.S. The Beaver State ranks in the top five for production of hops, blueberries, snap beans, wine grapes, and cranberries among other popular domestic crops. Around 35,000 farms reside throughout the mountainous, coastal state. The north central Columbia Gorge River Plateau and west central Willamette Valley regions of the state boasts some of the most fertile areas of land for crop growing. Approximately 1.7 million acres of land remain in use for agricultural purposes in the Willamette Valley region, rivaled only by the 6.6 million acres in use for farming in the Columbia Gorge Plateau. Combined, the two areas account for more than $3.6 billion in sales, which comprises two-thirds of total revenues derived from state agriculture per annum.

Favorable mild, humid oceanic climates, fertile soils, and eco-conscious denizens drive the agricultural industry throughout Oregon, with the geographical conditions and overarching environmental philosophies allowing for unique and special attention paid to organic and ethical farming methods. The Beaver State enjoys an international reputation for high-quality products, which spurs outside interests in the purchase of commodities grown, raised, and/or processed. Between 80% and 90% of commodities produced in the state leave the region for sale in other states, with around half of the exports reaching foreign markets. Increasing demands nationwide for organic and cruelty-free fruits, vegetables, meats, and dairy products breed thousands of jobs in the Northwest state, as well. In 2012, roughly one out of every eight jobs related to the agricultural industry in some form. In excess of 140,000 pickers, migrant workers, and farmhands maintain gainful employment in the industry.

Job seekers looking for Oregon agricultural work primarily fare best when contacting individual farms. 84% of all farms in operation throughout the state remain under individual control. Most farms range between 10 and 50 acres in size and require dozens of able-bodied persons to carry out daily functions and manage subordinate employees. A majority of farm work available includes part-time or seasonal entry-level job opportunities. However, experienced professionals often find long-term, full-time employment as staff supervisors or administrators. The average wage for a farm, fishing, greenhouse, or forestry employee in Oregon rests between $10.00 and $14.00 per hour.

Some of the largest employers in the Oregon farming industry include the State Department of Agriculture and Threemile Canyon Farms. Oregon Department of Agriculture employs over 600 workers alone. Threemile Canyon Farms, which covers close to 93,000 acres, boasts over 300 year-round workers and an additional 400 seasonal fruit and vegetable pickers during harvests. Farms of similar size hire and retain hardworking individuals to serve as full-time or part-time staff members with regularity. Often overlooked, the agriculture industry in Michigan supplies billions of dollars to the state economy as well as thousands of farm-related careers. Field crops produce the greatest revenue for the state yielding approximately $5.72 billion; however, livestock, including dairy, rival closely with profits soaring to almost $4.73 billion. Further economic impact derives from nursery and landscape production at roughly $1.20 billion. With over 51,600 farms, the food and agriculture industry annually contributes around $101.2 billion to the state gross domestic product. Well known for blueberries, tart cherries, pickling cucumbers, squash, petunias, and geraniums, the Great Lake state also ranks high in production of carrots, celery, dry beans, and apples. Generating more than 300 diverse commodities, Michigan successfully creates employment for 920,000 farm laborers, practically 22% of the workforce.

A majority of farms in The Wolverine State, roughly 95%, consist of single-family and family-owned partnerships. Of the corporate-structured facilities, approximately 99% comprise of multiple generations. The average farmer stands at 56 years of age and sustains close to 193 acres. Farmland encompasses almost 9.95 million acres of dedicated terrain. Operating off of the land, about 25,000 Michiganders hold primary occupations in the industry. Close to another 52,000 people maintain part-time positions within related fields.

The Fruit Ridge, a topographical land feature in West Michigan, derives from extensive agricultural activity, specifically fruit production. Also known as the agricultural mecca, The Ridge contains deposits of fertile clay loam soils possessing excellent moisture-holding properties. High elevation, greater than 800 feet, and proximity to Lake Michigan induce the ultimate climate for premium vegetables and fruits. Home to Old Orchard Juice Company, the territory spans well over 158 square miles in portions of Muskegon, Newaygo, and Kent. Acres of apple orchards utilize natural irrigation, cool breezes, and frost-mitigating to successfully produce over 22 varieties of apples. In 2006, the western ridge accounted for 65% of apple production in Michigan. Hand harvesters locate openings at places such as Gavin Orchards, Klackle Orchards, and Harbor Hill Fruit Farms.

Government-based Migrant, Immigrant and Seasonal Worker Services Division offers a full-range of employment services to job seekers and establishments. Career specialists, both Spanish-speaking and knowledgeable in local labor markets, assist candidates with obtaining entry-level positions. Through additional job development, applicants find work as general laborers, farmhands, pickers, animal caretakers, and other farming positions. Qualified employment hopefuls may choose to apply online with larger operations or seek out farm owners in person for smaller venues. Traditional land owners prefer hard workers prepared for long hours of physical labor. Wyoming Farm Jobs – Harvest and Seasonal Work

One of the largest territories in the United States, Wyoming offers ideal conditions for thriving livestock industries. The open plains and severely underdeveloped lands contribute to nearly half of the state used for agricultural purposes. In the Equality State, more than 85% of total agricultural cash receipts stem from livestock sales, with a majority of livestock sales attributed to beef alone. Other major agricultural outputs include grains like corn, barley, wheat, and oats. Hay represents the most widely grown crop in the state agricultural industry. The Plains State also produces a wide variety of beans and sugar beets.

The expansive and rolling terrains found throughout Wyoming result in a lucrative cattle industry. Early settlers capitalized on the massive herds of cattle leftover from Spanish occupations. Corralling the animals led to the establishment of large ranches, many of which remain in operation. Roughly 11,700 farms reside in the massive western state, with an average size of 2,500 acres per farm. Agricultural business accounts for a combined 30 million acres of land statewide.

Average growing seasons extend from late May through early October, roughly spanning 145 days. Temperatures fluctuate significantly between the eastern and western parts of the state, with averages falling by 5.5 degrees per 1,000ft. gained in elevation. Most areas in The Equality State see average annual temperatures around 45 degrees Fahrenheit and little rainfall. The capital of Wyoming, Cheyenne, sees only 99 days of precipitation each year, with rainfalls amounting to no more than 16 inches total. The mountainous regions to the west experience between 20 and 25 inches of rainfall annually, which still sits below the national average of 28 inches yearly.

Some of the best places to look for Wyoming agricultural jobs include areas throughout the flat, eastern portions of the state. To the west along the borders of Idaho, Utah, and Montana to the north sit the Rocky Mountains, which limit cultivation in the area. The eastern portions of the state remain dry and arid, largely mimicking desert-like conditions; however, modern irrigation practices and dry farming enable large-scale crop growing. Many large cattle ranches also maintain smaller traditional farming operations in addition to grazing fields requiring seasonal pickers and farmhands to plant, sow, maintain, and harvest various commodities throughout the calendar year.

Ranching serves as the most accessible form of agriculture in Wyoming followed by traditional crop farming. Individuals regularly encounter premium wages, with average pay scales sitting around $13.00 per hour. Salary options continue to rise for farmers and ranch hands graduating into supervisory roles or administrative positions up to $30,000 a year or more. According to the Department of Agriculture website, livestock receipts comprise around a third of total sales receipts for the state farming industry.

Despite traditions rooted in the notions of The Old West, Utah contains diverse populations of citizens and varied opportunities for agricultural employment. Around 20% of the state population descends from Hispanic or Latino ancestry, which provides suitable networking for migrant workers moving north from states like Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. The smallest state in the U.S. in terms of land mass, Rhode Island boasts a strong economy highlighted by a growing agricultural industry. South Dakota Farm Jobs – Harvest and Seasonal Work

As the top industry in the state, South Dakota agriculture serves many major purposes and represents the largest economic draw for the area. With a population resting around 853,000, the state reported more than 122,000 citizens held agricultural jobs in 2012, which amounts to roughly 15% of the total populace. Farmers utilize approximately 43.7 million acres of land, or 68,280 square miles, for pastureland and farmland. However, the Great Plains territory encompasses only 77,116 square miles, or 49.2 million acres, which renders over 88% of The Mount Rushmore State reserved for farming. Each year, traditional crop farming and livestock raising produce between $19 billion and $25 billion worth of economic impact across the state.

Early settlers in the area encountered harsh conditions upon arriving in South Dakota. With dry arid summers, lack of timber and water supplies further west of the Missouri River, and brutal winters, the pioneers saw the necessity of inventing new ways to farm. Through the use of windmills to tap underground reservoirs and dry farming techniques developed in the early 1900s, farmers slowly began to cross over into the Great Plains territory with confidence. Cattle represented the first real, formidable industry in The Mount Rushmore State; however, legislation limiting the size of ranches and harsh winters led to a decline in the industry, although cattle and livestock raising still represents a large portion of the state gross domestic product.

In contemporary times, special grants and other government-subsidized provisions allow the industry to grow and prosper as new technologies develop and safer environmental practices come to the forefront of farming practices. The average farm consists of roughly 1,400 acres, mainly used for grazing. As of January 2015, more than 3.7 million head of cattle resided in South Dakota and around 4.5 million turkeys. Cattle produced around 2.1 billion pounds of milk the same year, which directly generated more than $520 million in revenues. Agricultural operations produce the largest supplies of farmed bison in the U.S., as well. Other than livestock, top commodities cultivated in the state include corn, soybeans, and wheat. Specifically, the Great Plains state produces distinct types of wheat, including hard red winter wheat, durum wheat, and hard red spring wheat. Grapes used for wine making also play a prevalent role in farming productions.

Despite some declines in the industry over the last 100 or so years, the South Dakota livestock trade provides the most opportunities for farmhands and migrant workers to find meaningful employment. Most ranches require teams of employees to round up cattle during harvest. Modern methods of rounding up cattle involve the use of trucks and trailers as opposed to horses, which renders most jobs highly obtainable with valid driver’s licenses and minimal experience. Most ranches ask prospective employees to remain open to flexible schedules and to feel comfortable working all hours of the day. A majority of the work involved in ranching requires manual dexterity, endurance, stamina, and alertness. Ranch hands regularly earn between $10.00 and $15.00 per hour, with opportunities to move into supervisory roles over time.

Aspiring fruit and vegetable pickers often find long-term employment on large commercial farms or small, family-owned operations, as well. Many commercial outfits hire graders and sorters to inspect the quality of commodities before sale or shipment. Smaller farms need pickers to harvest and/or plant crops during certain times of the year. While smaller, family-owned South Dakotan farms mostly hire individuals on part-time bases, opportunities for full-time work may arise as workers prove value and demonstrate abilities. Typical pay scales for part-time or full-time picking jobs fall around $10.00 hourly. Employees on both large commercial farms and smaller, private operations may also receive various work benefits for services rendered. Discounts or duty-free products remain commonplace among fruit and vegetable pickers. Individuals in career-oriented positions, either state-appointed or administrative, may become eligible for health insurance plans, 401(k) retirement plans, and paid time off.

Massachusetts Farm Jobs – Harvest and Seasonal Work

The Massachusetts agricultural industry provides a variety of farm jobs and agricultural careers. In 2012, total agricultural outputs produced in excess of $492 million, with each individual farm valued at close to $12,000 per acre. Despite boasting one of the greatest population densities in the U.S., The Bay State calls home to roughly 7,750 farms. Southeastern and northwestern portions of the state represent the most active agricultural areas of the New England territory, with more than 16% of Franklin, Dukes, and Plymouth counties comprised of farmland. The densely populated state encompasses around 523,000 acres of land purposed specifically for crop growing or livestock raising out of a total 6.7 million acres (7.8%). Nursery and greenhouse operations also serve as considerable agricultural outputs and produce over a quarter of total domestic commodities.

One of the smallest states in the Union, Massachusetts possesses several redeeming factors, such as an eastern border along the Atlantic Ocean (1,500 miles) offering low coastal plains, which render the area ideal for farming and trade. Mostly temperate climates provide for adequate growing seasons, as well. Forests cover a vast majority of the state, and historically rocky soils in the east also limit arable farmland; however, over 250 years of colonization produced highly developed irrigation practices utilizing both the neighboring ocean to the east and the Connecticut River Valley in the western portion of the state to create ample land suitable for farming. The two areas consequently yield the largest agricultural outputs of any other regions statewide.

Massachusetts cash crops include dairy, livestock, sweet corn, apples, and cranberries. Aquaculture commodities, such as finfish, oysters, and quahogs, also contribute to the prosperity of the industry. Depending on the region, farms typically enjoy growing seasons lasting between 120 and 200 days. The state primarily experiences localized rainfalls resulting in flash erosion of top soils; however, the instances remain limited and usually only effect areas minimally. Total annual precipitation sits between 40 inches and 50 inches. Half of the annual precipitation manifests in the form of snow. Most snowfalls occur between October and March. Temperate climates create ideal circumstances for farms to successfully plant, cultivate, and harvest crops, which requires thousands of workers annually. Many farms offer picking jobs on seasonal bases as well as part-time and full-time positions.

The Ocean Spray Cooperative places Old Colony State farms among the largest cranberry farming practices in the United States. Migrant workers, pickers, and farmhands routinely find employment in the booming cranberry industry. State cranberry farming efforts produce close to 20% of the entire agricultural domestic product equaling more than $100 million. The Ocean Spray Cooperative alone provides more than 2,000 job opportunities for agricultural industry employment hopefuls. Around 400 farms in The Codfish State grow cranberries. Migrant workers regularly find cranberry picking jobs in Massachusetts in addition to local farmhands and career-aspiring administrators.

In addition to Ocean Spray Cranberries, examples of large Massachusetts agricultural businesses include the Massachusetts Farm Bureau Federation in Marlborough and the state department of agriculture. Both act as lucrative places of employment offering widespread opportunities for work. Nationwide, agricultural workers earned an average $18,000 annual salary in 2012. As of May 2014, vegetable pickers, fruit pickers, and general farm laborers earned median salary options around $27,000. Many large farms, including cooperatives like Ocean Spray, provide employment benefits to full-time staff members as well as flexible scheduling and discounts on crop and/or livestock yields.
